Graduate Program

Our role here in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC) is to support the Premier as the head of government and contribute to the economic, cultural and environmental development of South Australia in a socially inclusive manner, consistent with South Australia's Strategic Plan.

The DPC Graduate Program provides an excellent pathway into our department, and opens up future opportunities for a career in government. Our program aims to increase the capacity of the department's graduates by providing a consistent, comprehensive and logically structured program of professional development. The program involves participants gaining a wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences over a 12 month period. It recognises that graduates bring individual skill sets and varying levels of work and personal experience to the department. This allows for flexibility and consideration of additional learning requirements, which can be tailored to suit graduate needs.

Recruitment for the DPC Graduate Program occurs annually and is advertised on this website. To ensure you don't miss out on the opportunity to apply for one of these exciting positions, register to receive email notification through the Job Alert function.

Stories from our Graduates

Hear from some of our past graduates about their experiences in DPC...

Dante"I'm glad I chose the DPC Graduate Program because I have had opportunities to work with interesting, talented and diverse people in SafeWork SA and through the department. This year, the DPC Graduate Program was combined with the Graduate Program for the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLBC). It has been very worthwhile meeting regularly to undertake workshops and programs with the graduates from DWLBC. We have shared experiences, established networks, discussed projects and the challenges we face on a day-to-day basis. Genuine friendships have been formed among the group.

During the DPC Graduate Program I contributed to my business unit through my involvement in core business activities, major projects and the development of relationships with external stakeholders. I led an investigation into the extent and nature of under reporting of notifiable workplace injuries in South Australia. I have also worked intensively on OHS in culturally and linguistically diverse workplaces, developing a new publication called 'Communicating OHS across languages' which will be published in 2010. I have also established an ongoing OHS education program for skilled migrants at TAFESA."

Jodie"Rotational placement provided me with the opportunity to determine the areas within DPC that matched my experience, qualifications and interests. The workings of state government proved a steep learning curve however practical experience and the comprehensive training and development opportunities provided through the DPC Graduate Program equipped me with the right skills. During my time with the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division I was involved in reviewing legislation to introduce changes that will enable Aboriginal prosperity.

My placement in Human Resources gave me the opportunity to work with supportive role models and develop a different set of skills relevant to HR strategy. For example, in the Organisational Development team I was responsible for facilitating a workshop with the Nunga Network Coordinating Committee to develop a commitment statement recognising Aboriginal cultural diversity in the workplace."
